I'm rewatching Arang and the Magistrate. Still love it. It's on Viki under the name Tale of Arang if you haven't watched it before. I caught it on Dramafever back in the day and was curious if it held up. It does.

Claire watches Asian dramas - Tale roundup
The two most recent supernatural rom-dramadies I’ve watched are both well worth the time spent with them, and both happen to have “Tale” in the title!
Tale of Arang (aka ”Arang and the Magistrate”) 2012           아랑사또전
Tumblr media
What’s not to like about this premise? Set in the Joseon era, a female ghost with no memory of how she died or who she was in life, attaches herself to a young, directionless nobleman’s son who happens to be able to see ghosts. He’s uninterested in the problems of others, alive or dead, and simply wants to find his missing mother. This Korean drama is 20 episodes long, each about 60-70 minutes in length, I watched it on Viki.com. The main couple have fantastic chemistry (played by  Lee Joon-gi and  Shin Min-ah), and overall the efforts of the cast make this drama very enjoyable and engaging, despite the laughably poor production qualities that plague numerous episodes.
Pros:
Female lead, the ghost Arang, is wonderfully independent and dedicated to finding her truths.
Male lead grows and changes, and respects Arang as an individual by the end.
He’s refreshingly non-toxic in his love for her, which is not always the case in the modern stories, let alone the period pieces.
Supporting characters are enjoyable, and the cheesiness is called out by other background characters when it gets too much.
I really enjoyed the mythology at play in this one - Grim Reapers are always fun characters to explore, and the Jade Emperor was charming!
Happy ending, in the very end.
Cons:
Prepare yourself for the worst production editing you’ve ever seen outside of a community college videography class:
Several scenes are just straight up MISSING their FX. As in, there’s a shot of a portal to the afterlife....and it’s just the background set   >.< There’s another scene where a cave is supposedly collapsing...and there’s a shot of a modern ladder leaning against the cave set wall. (Eat your heart out, Starbucks cup in a Game of Thrones episode!)
Makeup is also inconsistently applied to ghost/reaper characters, and there are a few continuity things with other people’s costumes, but this is only minorly distracting and isn’t really too bad.
The villains of the piece are chewing all the scenery exposed by the lack of special effects. Especially the supernatural Big-Bad. DRAMTIC. EYE-ROLLING. FOR DAYS.
Despite the flaws in production and direction, I really, really enjoyed this show! The ending felt a bit rushed and was a bit shaky on touchdown, but it landed. The chemistry between the main lead couple made it all work, and the supporting cast (especially the Jade Emperor and shaman) also helped hold it all together.
Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 (2023)  구미호뎐 1938
Tumblr media
Whether or not you’ve seen the first season (Tale of the Nine-Tailed), you should definitely watch this follow-up series! The first episode quickly introduces the characters and tone, no prior knowledge needed to enjoy this supernatural dramady. There is romance, but it’s a side dish to the main plot, which is that Lee Yeon, the titular nine-tailed fox and former mountain god, gets thrown back in time to 1938 and must defeat enemies from his past and the humans’ present to return to 2020-ish and his life with Nam Ji-Ah. On Amazon Prime, the show is 12 episodes long, each one 50-70 minutes long. Go watch it!!
Pros:
Lee Dong-Wook revises his role as Lee Yeon. That’s reason enough to watch it. For that matter, basically all the supporting cast of supernatural characters revise their roles, and are just as good in this show as in the first series!
The humor is on-point. There are several moments of laugh-out-loud comedy courtesy of Lee Yeon and Koo Shin-Joo making fun of Lee Rang.
Strong, complex female characters, old and new.
LOVE the Korean mythology that this series explores, much like they do in the first one.
Exploring a moment in history that many Western audiences are ignorant of, this show is fun AND educational!
Exciting fight scenes, a variety of interesting set pieces for the conflicts.
Beautiful costumes and settings, you can tell the production team had fun with this one!
Cons:
It’s pretty cheesy at times, but it knows it and plays with it (so not really a con?)
The overarching mystery isn’t fully wrapped up at the end, though it’s clearly the end of the main plot arch. Setting up a third season????
There are a couple places where the tonal shifts are very abrupt, some of the character development seems a little too OOC.
Overall, none of the cons are very impactful for me, and I just really, really love the characters, time period setting, and fun scenarios the show takes us through. I think I liked season 1 better in terms of plot, but season 2 wins for style.

Night Watchman’s Journal. 7-8
Story: 7
Acting: 9
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Alchemy of Souls (kdrama) ; Arang and the Magistrate (kdrama)
The general storyline of this drama wasn’t that bad in fact I actually quite enjoyed it. I’m a big fan of supernatural fantasy shows, so that might of played a major factor in that. It’s very unique but where it falters in is that of plot holes and the curse of being draggy in the middle. It’s an underrated gem for those who love fantasy drama. Jung II Woo is excellent in it.

Tumblr media
(Photo : tvN Drama Official) Lee Joon Gi Arthdal Chronicles is a fantasy drama that tells the story of the mythical land of Arth, where different kingdoms and tribes coexist. The drama explores the themes of power, love, identity, and destiny through the lives of its main characters. The first season of Arthdal Chronicles consisted of three parts: The Children of Prophecy, The Sky Turning Inside Out Rising Land, and The Prelude to All Legends. It followed the journey of Eun Seom (Song Joong Ki), an Igutu who was born with a blue star-shaped mark on his hand. He was prophesied to bring disaster to Arthdal, the capital city of the Arthdal Union. He grew up among the Wahan tribe, a peaceful clan that lived in harmony with nature. He met Tan Ya (Kim Ji Won), a girl who had a similar mark on her hand and was destined to become the high priestess of the Wahan tribe.

The first season depicted how Eun Seom’s fate intertwined with Ta Gon’s ambition, as well as how Tan Ya’s destiny affected Tae Al Ha’s plans. The season ended with several cliffhangers: Eun Seom escaped from slavery and became the leader of the Ago tribe; Tan Ya became the high priestess of Arthdal; Ta Gon declared himself as king; Tae Al Ha gave birth to Ta Gon’s son; Sa Ya (also played by Song Joong Ki), Eun Seom’s twin brother who was separated at birth, woke up from his coma; and Cha Eun (Choo Ja Hyun), a Neanderthal woman who raised Eun Seom and Sa Ya, revealed herself to be alive.

Watch List- Foreign Language Television and Movies (Latest Update Nov. 6, 2024)
Foreign movies and television I want to watch. Because many if not most of these are not dubbed I have to dedicate more attention to them than those in English. I'm the type of person that usually writes, does a craft, etc while I have a show or movie going so I use this list under less common circumstances than most of the others.
Because of the sheer number of things I want to watch I’m separating my watch list posts into four categories. I keep them separate primarily for organization so I can decide what to watch based different variables (mood, time, language, etc)
I’m pretty much constantly adding things to all of my lists- hence why I’m amending when this was last updated to the title itself- and will update this post anytime I update the wheel I use to randomize my next choice, which usually happens after I’ve added or subtracted a significant number of options.

KOREAN DRAMA TV SERIES:  Arang and the Magistrate (2012) So I finished watching Arang and the Magistrate (also called Tale of Arang).  I should say that I re-watched it.  I watched it several years ago but forgot large parts of the story.  Since it was on Viki.com and I am fan of Lee Joon Gi, I watched it again. It was 20 episodes.  This series was a historical period drama / #fantasy / #romance.  The plot kept me interested because there was quite a mix of characters.  There were gods, demons, fairies, ghosts, the Grim Reaper, and of course, humans.  I was hooked all the up until The End.  That final episode was … ??? … I didn't know what to think.  It was almost like the scriptwriter couldn't figure out the best way to conclude.   Anyway!  It was still very entertaining.  I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Ones I liked were:
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (supernatural being/mythology/magical creatues)
Live Up to Your Name (time travel)
The School Nurse Files (magic and magical creatures)
The Master's Sun (ghosts)
Arang and the Magistrate (ghosts)
Mystic Popup Bar (spirits/afterlife)
Oh My Ghost (ghosts)
Bring it On Ghost (I actually like the Thai remake better because of the leads)
Sell Your Haunted House (ghosts)
The Witch's Diner (magic)
Tomorrow (grim reapers)
Tomorrow with You (time travel)
Possessed (ghosts and shamans)
Some of these have typical (usually male) leads you can't stand at the beginning but they grow as characters by the end of the drama. Not all of these have romance and some do not have happy endings.
The thing about fantasy kdramas that I was never sold on is that they will give you two awful, selfish, unlikable characters and then you are supposed to care if they fall in love and also not die.
